What Causes a Sinus Infection?

A sinus infection (acute sinusitis) usually follows a viral infection that has caused damage to the cells of the sinus lining, leading to inflammation. The inflammation causes a thickening of fluids in the sinus passage and prevents the removal of bacteria normally present in the nasal passages.
