Opiate Relase Theory

A modality, such as a TENS unit, is applied to the point of pain for an extended amount of time (30 min on, and 30 min off during waking hours).  This long duration of treatment causes the release of enkephalin from local sites in the CNS and ß-endophin from the pituitary gland into the spinal fluid.  The pain relief from the release of these chemicals will usually last for approximately 6 to 7 hours.
