What is sciatica?

Sciatica is the common name for a group of symptoms that result from the compression or irritation of one or more of five nerve roots that join the sciatic nerve. Sciatica can also result from the compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve itself. The pain caused by this can be felt in the lower back, buttocks, and/or various parts of the legs and feet. Numbness, muscle weakness and difficulty controlling the leg can also result from this condition. The pain is usually severe and typically effects only one side of the body.
