Shingles, or the Herpes Zoster virus, is often characterized by lesions of the skin. Shingles is often very painful and causes a burning and itching sensation associated with the inflammation of a shingles outbreak. What is shingles and herpes zoster?

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is painful and unsightly. It leads to terrible sores that can typically spread across the chest, back and even the face. Many people develop a condition called Post Herpetic Neuralgia, or PHN, in which the sores have healed but the nerve pain persists.

Although roughly 70% of the sufferers are over 50, shingles can strike at any age. The severe sores and pain of shingles lead patients to all sorts of remedies — most are too little, too late. For years, shingles has defied treatment. Herpes Zoster can attack anyone who has ever had chicken pox. The varicella virus that causes shingles lies dormant in the ganglia adjacent to the spinal cord. If the virus reactivates, it is then carried along the nerves to the surface causing skin inflammation and nerve pain. A person suffering from shingles can also pass along the herpes zoster virus in the form of chicken pox to anyone who has not had it.
